Chapter Fourteen Page Three, Dave, Eventide Manor

“Hey,” Dave said, heart shaking, arms weak, as he tried to push himself up.

She opened her eyes, which Dave hadn’t even realized were closed, and Dave felt something powerful wash over him. The edges of his vision turned white. She stepped closer to him and Dave attempted to stand, but realized he had no ability to do so. She moved with grace, as though she were walking onto a stage to perform a dance. When she knelt down, she grabbed Dave’s hand and moved it up to her veil. Dave grabbed it and pulled it off, thinking that it was what she wanted him to do.
Her eyes were white orbs with no pupils. He felt no less paralyzed than before. Unsmiling, she placed a hand on the center of his chest. The touch was cold, and Dave became aware of a soft sensation, a coolness that radiated outwards from her touch. Although he could not see her pupils, Dave felt that she was staring into his eyes.
“No,” Dave said, “I don’t know what you’re doing but please, fucking, stop.”
She didn’t. Dave looked down and saw that her hand was somehow going through his shirt. He realized that the coolness was numbness. Dave let go of the shroud and tried to move his hand to grab her wrist. The effort made him feel half asleep. His arm barely even obeyed, and the fingers even less so, when he tried to close them. Sluggish didn’t even begin to describe what Dave thought of his suddenly useless body.
The numbness spread faster along his arms and legs than his neck, where it slowed. Although he did feel it creeping up along the veins, as it did elsewhere.
“Fucking,” Dave said, not knowing what else to add, “Gah.”
The mannequin woman suddenly started to smile. It was a shame that she was so goddamn beautiful. Dave wasn’t sure if he was totally aware of the situation, though. There was something skeletal about her too, like she was an animate corpse, or someone who’d been kept starving for far too long.
Dave hadn’t even noticed the whiteness closing closer and closer over his vision. He didn’t even notice when someone else entered the room.
“You just had to go around,” Bira said, “Opening locked doors.”
