So Dave went ahead and opened the boxes.
The first box was large enough to contain a
desktop PC. He opened it and found a black t-shirt and a dark red sweatshirt.
Dave put these on but brought the quilt back around his shoulders because it
was pretty comfortable. The first box didn’t contain anything else. Dave
figured it’d been big enough for more than just a t-shirt and sweatshirt but he
figured he was still grateful for the clothing. He’d have to say thank you when he got a chance.
There’s never a time to stop being polite.
He chuckled.
Dave opened the second box. It’d been hard
to slide across the floor towards him so he figured there was a lot of food
inside. From the rustling noises he heard from within when he shook it he
figured it was a cereal of some kind. When he ripped open the tape that secured
the top of it he was even more sure because he glimpsed a bag inside. A great
big bag like they sold cheap namebrand cereal in.
But it was just cat food. Dave stopped
himself from being too disappointed. The note had only said there was food. It
hadn’t specified which kind of food it was going to be. Dave wanted to remember
to say thanks for that too.
There’s never a time to stop being
sarcastic.
The third box had a backpack. Dave couldn’t
find anything inside of it when he zipped it open. He wasn’t sure what he’d
been expecting. It was just an empty black backpack that he supposed would
serve some kind of unspecified purpose at some future point.
He returned to the bed and fell asleep a
little later.
He dreamed about being a dockworker who had
to secure the ropes holding some boats to a dock. He kept running back and
forth, trying to secure them, but it was just him and there were so many ropes.
The boats kept steaming, pushing, trying to break free. Eventually Dave just
let the fucking things go and watched them drift into the ocean. Watched them
sink. In the dream Dave had been pretty sure it was his fault.
