“Ha ha.” Dani’s voice echoed, “You’re an
invisible ghost, aren’t you?” At this point, Dani wanted to see something. Something to validate her fears.
But if anything answered her, it was
silence, and silence doesn’t really care too much. Silence answers a lot of
people. Answering is what silence does. Dani didn’t think silence was very good
for anything else.
“Lousy goddamn silence,” Dani said, “Silence
and invisible ghosts and, like, nothing at all.” She found the sound of her
voice was nice.
She walked around the side of the desk,
sliding her hand on its surface through dust. As she walked around it, she saw

unmistakably briefcase shaped. “Oh,” Dani said, “That’s where it was. But it’s
gone now. Good. I swear if I found a briefcase here I was going to, oh, god,
what?”
The room’s illumination plummeted rapidly
until she was alone in the dark. She looked up and glimpsed the outlines of the
windows. She realized someone had covered them. She pulled out her phone and
shone it in the direction of the door.
Tens of pairs of eyes
stared back at her in the dark. Dani gasped, “Will wasn’t lying
for once.” There was a noise at the door.NEXT PAGE
