There
was a circle of stones.
It was a sparse Stonehenge; only four
pillars around her, each engraved with a symbol. She never saw three of them;
just the one with the bird carved onto it.
The sky above was almost white. The first
time she’d died, it’d been a perfect blue, but each time she’d returned, it’d
grown less and less saturated. She walked, feeling the grass under her bare
feet. She placed her hand against the coolness of the stone, ran her fingers
across it. She wasn’t sure how long she stood there. It might have been an
eternity, it might have been seconds.
She was aware that she was being watched
like before, but when she looked around, she only saw the other three stones.
Not a pair of eyes around. The signs on the other stones were blurred, but she
was sure that if she could see them, she would see a wolf, a spider, and a
snake.
A noise interrupted her. A long and
high pitched screech. She heard it again. An again. With less time between each
sound.
Eventually, it resolved into steady beeping
noise, slow, each beep taking five seconds to sound and then resting for a
minute. It grew faster until it was roughly regular, and the stone circle began
to fade and blur, and grow darker.
She realized her eyes were closed.
So she opened them.
