“He’s here to help,” Elys said. He saw that
she’d already gotten her staff out; the front windshield of Kyle Avem’s cruiser
was shattered and glass littered the dashboard and front seats. She smashed the
driver’s side window next, and David winced at the loud sound, “How do you like
it when someone defames what you love, huh? You think it’s cool now?”
Kyle’s face screwed back into full rage mode
again; it was grotesque, a horror movie expression, something that happened
unintentionally due to poor art design (nightmare
fuel; that was the term) and in nightmares you tried desperately to forget.
Dave didn’t even see where Kyle grabbed the monkey wrench from.
Kyle started across towards Elys, who, to
her credit, backed up to dodge his first swing. Dave ran behind him and grabbed
him, but received an elbow in the gut and slid backwards, fell on his ass. Kyle
turned, swinging the monkey wrench as he did so. Dave kicked at the side of the
car to move out of its path, still trying to catch his breath from the gut
injury.
The arc brought it into the wall of Kyle’s
garage, where the wrench smashed drywall and wood. Kyle pulled it free before
David could get up, so Dave crab crawled backwards. Kyle brought the wrench up
into the air, malice alight in his eyes, bloodlust pouring through his face.
But Kyle Avem winced, as the edge of a blade
pointed out from his chest. He wheezed, and turned. The staff snapped out of
Elys’ fingers, the blade refusing to break off. Kyle swung hard, and she
tripped as she backed up over her backpack that had been lying on the floor behind
her.
Dave leapt up, pulled his knife from his
jacket, and plunged it into the back of Kyle Avem’s neck. He wrenched it out
and stepped aside too late from the blood that pulsed out. Kyle slumped to the
floor, his motor functions ceased, as his life’s esscence flowed out of him.
And so Kyle Avem died.
Elys picked herself up. “Nice,” was all she
said. “Let’s set off the bomb. I really wanted to hear it for myself and I
guess this is as good a chance as any.”
Dave wasn’t sure how to respond. He didn’t
want her to, but he was looking at the blood on his hands and arms.
Elys made the decision for him, getting Kyle
Avem’s keys from his pocket, and starting the car. To her credit, the bomb
didn’t make that much more noise than a firecracker and didn’t make a very
large explosion at all.
But it blew open the front hood of the car. Dave
ran before anyone would come to check what the noise had been. He jumped from
the window and started running. He didn’t think Mary’s house would be the
safest choice after all.
He looked left and right, and then saw
someone waving him forward to where they were. Bira was grinning, pointed incisors
bared.
